We set out that day with the intention of placing satellite tags on a few belugas as part of the “Belugas on the Move” project. On board the Bleuvet, we find ourselves near Île aux Basques off the coast of Trois-Pistoles. Nearby is a herd of 70 individuals consisting mostly of adults and a few young. Based on the size of the individuals and their behaviour, we believe it is a herd of bulls.

Amongst them, we note the presence of DL1328. He is swimming in the company of a juvenile. The herd splits into three groups scattered over approximately one kilometre. On a few occasions, we are able to hear some of the belugas vocalize.

Despite the rain, we attempt to place a tag on the back of one animal, but to no avail. Faced with these adverse weather conditions, we decide to postpone our mission until another trip out to sea.
