We’re observing Delphi in the Saguenay Fjord… Pointe à Passe-Pierre to be exact. She’s swimming in a herd of 30 or so belugas that are making their way upstream. Within the herd, we notice a few entirely white individuals, though 50% of them are gray or slightly gray. We also observe two newborns. After an hour of observation, the animals completely change direction and plot a course for the mouth of the Saguenay.
On board the Bleuvet, film director Michael Parfit is with us to shoot his documentary Call of the Baby Beluga. His crew has spent months with us and with other research teams tracking the belugas in their home range in order to tell the story of this small threatened population and the efforts that have been undertaken in recent decades to protect them.
